Please tell us about yourself, your business, what you are offering, and your business’ specialty.
My name is Najeeba Abdullah, and my business is Amazing Existence. I am an artist; I create and paint as well. I love to make jewelry and create things, but I do a lot of jewelry making using stones, crystals, copper, and wire. I offer my paintings on my newly launched website as well. I have earrings I call “Two Soulmates” [made of copper and people shaped]; my rings are really abstract. A lot of my designs are inspired by the different dimensions of the universe and space.
What does Leimert Park mean to you?
It’s culture, family, a lot of support, and it’s really powerful. I love Leimert. I’ve been coming here for three years, I believe.
Are you originally from Los Angeles? Did you grow up in the area?
No, I am from Chicago. I moved here twelve years ago and been a vendor for the last three years. I started creating maybe eight years ago, but then I decided I wanted to make a business out of my jewelry three years ago.
Tell us a little bit about the successes you benefitted from and challenges you’ve had to adjust to or overcome throughout this 2020 year.
It’s been a good year, 2020. Being consistent is important; it’s a challenge for me, I guess. Even though I love to create but doing it everyday; all day, it’s a battle.
What has been your inspiration for specialty jewelry making, creating and the decision in starting Amazing Existence?
I always had a passion to create. When I was younger, my brother would always draw people, and I was impressed and was like, I want to learn how to draw. Yeah, I was inspired by my brother growing up and watching him. But what got me into making jewelry was depression. I was depressed at one time, and it [jewelry making] brought me out of it. It [jewelry making] was healing for me.
Did you have a mentor or family members to support you?
Yeah, my brother is an amazing artist; he was a huge inspiration for me.
What can we expect from Najeeba Abdullah and Amazing Existence in the new year 2021?
More unique jewelry. Sometimes you get stuck on the same patterns I notice, with me, so I start to venture out to create different pieces.
